Performance Fitness has the best possible instructors anywhere. They are professionals in their daily lives, from School Teachers & Construction Foreman, to Police Officers. Shihan Charles Burger is the head instructor. Shihan Charles began training in the Martial Arts at the age of 10. Shihan Charles started his full-contact career with Sensei Doug Brown in 1994. Together, they have competed all over the United States and Canada. Shihan Charles is the 1997 Kyokushin U.S. Open Heavyweight Champion & the 1998 North American International Heavyweight Champion, and was one of 4 fighters to represent the United States in the 7 World Open, an event held once every four years in Tokyo Japan, and is considered to be the Olympics of full-contact Karate. Shihan Charles is also a Certified N.Y.S Defensive Tactics instructor who has experience training recruit and veteran Police Officers in street survival.
Kyokushin Karate
Karate translates to “empty hand”. Kyokushin is a style of Karate developed by Mas Oyama based upon courtesy, respect and diligence and is known for its hard training and full contact sparring and translates to “ultimate truth”. Performance Fitness is in N.A.K.O. under Kancho Henrioh. Kyokushin is more than just punching and kicking, it is a mindset, it’s about instilling the Positive “yes I can” attitude and teaches you that, no matter what obstacle lies in front of you, anything is possible with a lot of hard work.
DT Lab
DT Lab is years of practical self-defense techniques put into intense, heart pumping exercise. In DT Lab, there are no uniforms, rank, or contact. You wear whatever is comfortable for you, usually sweats and T-shirts. We do require a cross-training type of shoe that has not been worn outdoors. At first, you will be shown proper ways to strike to get maximum results without injury, the proper way to fall and get back up. Class will start with a light warm-up and be followed by stretching, then, go into timed circuit training, very similar to crossfit. Class will end with a cool down stretch and a self-defense technique.
